Help a Child Go to School This Fall Looking Good and Feeling Confident

Back-to-School Clothes for Kids ("BTS") provides new school clothing to needy children in Westchester and the Bronx, with the help of donations from businesses and their employees; from clubs, individuals and local retail stores. Getting new clothes for school sends a message to a child that school is important and that he or she is important. The new clothing these kids receive helps them feel confident that first day of school, but the benefits go further. This clothing will help a needy child get through the fall and cold winter months.

Here’s how the program works…..

For kids aged 5 to 11, sponsors shop for school clothing for a child based on a “Profile” which contains sizes and color preference.
For 12 years olds and teenagers, funds are donated and BTS has “Shopping Nights” in August at local stores. The teens come to the store with social workers; they are given a budget; volunteers assist and they purchase clothing that they like for school. Imagine the thrill for a teen of very little means to be able to buy a variety of clothes for his or herself!

If you are a business, why not conduct a “Back-to-School Clothes for Kids” campaign in your company in August. See the link labeled “Clothing Campaign” for promotional material and for a step-by-step guideline that will assure success. Last year, 40 Westchester businesses participated. Some sponsored 1 child, some 10 some 100 children. Every sponsorship is precious to the child who receives those new duds for that first day of school! Companies which have conducted such programs have found that the experience fosters teamwork and a sense of achievement. It also highlights your company as one that gives back to the community. We also welcome corporate $ contributions. That’s how we fund our “teen shopping nights”.

If you are an individual, family, a group of friends or a club, you also can sponsor a child. Parents have told us that it was a great way for kids to learn about and help a child who is not as fortunate as themselves.

Here’s what a 15 year old girl who received clothing wrote her sponsor: “My name is Shawn and I’m 15 years old. I’ll be starting high school this year. I would like to thank you for buying these clothes for me. It’s the first time anyone has given me a variety of clothes to wear to school when I really needed it. I appreciate it a lot”.
